Highly sought after Victorian snake necklace. Made in 15ct yellow gold. It dates from around 1860. When Prince Albert proposed to Queen Victoria with a continuous snake ring she announced the snake as a symbol of eternal love. After the proposal snake jewelry became all the rage, and is very sought after today. This magnificent, smiling, snake has three rhodolite garnet of purplish red on its head. Garnet cabochon eyes look out at you, taking everything in. A heart dangles from its mouth set with a fourth faceted rhodolite garnet. On the back side of the heart locket is hair from the original beloved. Like a photo would be used today. This can be removed for you to put in your own item if you chose. The necklace is 18 inches in length with the heart dropping another 1.25 inches. Weight is 32.55 g. In very good antique condition.
